Replica of the mission patch worn by the astronauts aboard the Challenger on its final mission.
Description
This is a replica of the patch that was worn by the crew of the Challenger (OV-099) on its last mission (STS-51-L). The shuttle exploded shortly after take off killing all seven members of the crew including civilian teacher Christa McAuliffe. In 1989 SWISD held a vote across the district to name the new middle school. The members of SWISD voted to name the new school after McAuliffe. Since then every new middle school opened in the district has bore the name of a Challenger crew member.
